چکیده

Firefighting is a combinatorial optimization problem on graphs that models the problem of determining the optimal strategy to contain a fire and save as much (trees, houses, etc.) from the fire as possible. We study a new version of firefighting, which we call Politician’s Firefighting and which exhibits more locality than the classical one-firefighter version. We prove that this locality allows us to develop an O(bn)-time algorithm for this problem on trees, where b is the number of nodes initially on fire. We further prove that Politician’s Firefighting is NP-hard on planar graphs of degree at least 5, and we present an O(m+ k4)-time algorithm for this problem on general graphs, where k is the number of nodes that burn using the optimal strategy, thereby proving that it is fixed-parameter tractable. We present experimental results that show that our algorithm’s search tree size is in practice much smaller than the worst-case bound of 4.

Irish Clientelism: A Reappraisal

Studies of Irish politics have generally used a clientelist framework: voters in rural areas seem to obtain state benefits through a politician's interventions and, in return, become the politician's "clients". This article reports anthropological research on urban brokerage and clientelism carried out in Dublin from 1978 to 1981 which suggests that a more complex analytic model is required. Cl...

Physiological Responses to Firefighting in Extreme Temperatures Do Not Compare to Firefighting in Temperate Conditions

Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine physiological responses to two different simulated firefighting exercises: a firefighting exercise with flashovers, smoke, poor visibility and extreme temperatures (300°) in a burning container and a standard firefighting exercise in temperate conditions. Furthermore, a second purpose of the study was to find out if the contribution of strength and ...

Effect of obesity on acute hemostatic responses to live-fire training drills.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of obesity and firefighting activities on coagulation and fibrinolytic activity in relatively young, apparently healthy firefighters. Firefighters performed simulated firefighting activities for 18 minutes in a live-fire training structure. Blood samples were obtained at baseline, before firefighting, and within a few minutes of completing ...

Core temperature and heart rate response to repeated bouts of firefighting activities.

UNLABELLED During live-fire firefighting operations and training evolutions, firefighters often consume multiple cylinders of air and continue to wear their personal protective equipment even after fire suppression activities have ceased. However, most studies have only reported core temperature changes during short-term firefighting activities and have shown a very modest increase in core temp...

Physiological recovery from firefighting activities in rehabilitation and beyond.

OBJECTIVES The primary objective of this study was to document the timeline of physiologic recovery from firefighting activities in order to inform emergency medical services (EMS) of vital sign values that might be expected during incident rehabilitation and in developing rehabilitation protocols to make decisions about when to return personnel to the fireground. Secondarily, we compared two d...
